Introduction
The following episodes describe a number of important and longest running blues festivals in Europe (part 1).
National Jazz and Blues Festival, London, 1961
National Jazz Festival, it was a showcase for British and US jazz and was held at Richmond Athletic Ground in the sedate London suburb of Richmond. The first festival took place on 26-27 August 1961, and the headline acts included Johnny Dankworth and Chris Barber. Inspiration for the event came from the Newport Jazz Festival, held in the US since 1954.[2]
In 1971, the festival finally found a permanent home when Pendleton moved base to Reading.

Puistoblues, Järvenpää, Finland, 1978
Arranging Puistoblues rests in the hands of the association Järvenpään Blues-Jazz Diggarit ry and some 500 volunteers. The association promotes interest in black rhythm music, among other things.
The early days were somewhat tough, but little by little the association got to arrange concerts. The spring of 1978 saw the birth of the idea that JDBD ry. should have a Blues festival of its very own.
Today, Puistoblues is one of the biggest blues events in Europe. Almost all of the big names in blues have visited Järvenpää. Simultaneously with Puistoblues, there are events for children and of street music.

Every year, one of Italy’s longest-running musical events returns: the Pistoia Blues Festival.
Since 1980, the streets of Pistoia have come alive to the sounds of both Italian and international artists. The stage in Piazza del Duomo has hosted numerous musicians and iconic legends of music, such as Carlos Santana, B.B. King, David Bowie, Bob Dylan, Patti Smith, and Lou Reed.
Each edition offers a unique mix of music legends and emerging talents, transforming the city into a vibrant cultural and musical hub. It’s an unmissable event for those who want to fully experience the energy and magic of music.

Rawa Blues Festival, Katowice, Poland, 1981
Rawa Blues Festival takes place every year at the beginning of October, in the city of Katowice, Poland. Since it's very beginning in 1981, Rawa Blues became the biggest and with the time also the most recognizable blues event in Poland.
For the first 10 years it was organized as a nationwide all-day blues sessions in several venues. With time it evolved, becoming an international blues festival at the beginning of the 90s. Then, the organizers started to invite the world 's greatest blues artists.

Blues Peer (Belgium Rythmn 'n' Blues), Peer, Belgium. 1986
Blues Peer (formerly Belgium Rhythm 'n' Blues Festival) is a festival in Belgium. It takes place every summer in the Deusterstraat in Peer, for a long time in the second or third weekend of July. The Festival was first held in 1985.
The last edition of the 'old' Blues Peer took place in July 2019. The organizer was declared bankrupt in January 2021. The festival seemed dead and buried, but some local promoters took the leap to continue. During a crowdfunding campaign in May 2021, the necessary resources were collected to organize the first renewed edition of Blues Peer in 2022.

Liri Blues Festival, sola del Liri, Italy, 1988
The Liri Blues Festival, known as "Liri Blues" (started in 1988) in Isola del Liri. The festival is a free, annual event and usually occurs during the month of July. Concerts are held in the main square (Piazza Boncompagni), in the streets and jam sessions happen late at night.
Following its initial success in the first few years, the Liri Blues Festival was shared with neighbouring towns, in particular Ferentino and Veroli. However, since the early years of the 21st century, Isola del Liri is once again the central location for the festival. Boncompagni Square plays host to the main events just as it did for the very first gig in 1988.
